The Wellington Dukes opened up their second round playoff series with a loss.
It wasn’t the start they were looking for but the game was fairly even despite being shut out 3-0 by Newmarket.
Newmarket finished the regular season in second place in the North division while Wellington finished first in the East division.
The visitors opened the scoring almost 15 minutes into the first frame when Matt Goeree beat Tyler Richardson to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hurricanes held the Dukes to four shots in the opening period.
The lone goal held up through the second period and into the third before Cole Thiessen added the insurance marker on the man advantage.
Eric Eremita sealed the game one victory with an empty net goal.
Wellington outshot Newmarket 22-21.
Game two is set for Sunday afternoon at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex.
