There’s a new twist on a telephone scam that has involved the Belleville Police Service as part of the fraud.
City police report that fraudsters have been calling residents demanding $500 for a gift card under threat of deportation.
The fraudster’s phone number that the victim will see will be 613-966-0882. That is the administration number for the Belleville Police Service.
Police again remind people not to send money over the phone, and that scammers often show local numbers as proof of their authenticity.
