A Toronto company is planning to establish an educational centre for medical marijuana in Belleville.
The project is proposed by Toronto Capital which owns the former Nortel building on Sidney Street.
The company has an application before the city’s planning committee to have the restricted industrial zoning changed to permit the marijuana production facility.
The project is proposed as a centre for extraction, analysis, training and equipment development.
The documents submitted to the city’s planning committee indicate “The facility will also be partnering with Loyalist College to operate educational seminars in conjunction with the college’s cannabis program.”
Loyalist President Ann Marie Vaughan states Loyalist “supports” the application to rezone the site and is exploring options.
In a statement of clarification to Quinte News Tuesday, Loyalist College indicates it simply provided a letter of support for “the rezoning.” It states “We are not in partnership with the company, simply talking as we are with many businesses in the sector.”

There will be a public meeting on the rezoning application at the city’s planning committee meeting on March 5, at city hall.
