A suspicious package turned out to be a false alarm in Belleville on Wednesday.
Police were called late yesterday morning after a briefcase was left beside a gas pump at a busy gas station on North Front Street.
The immediate area around the gas bar was cordoned off for an investigation.
About 30 minutes later, police had identified the party who left the briefcase.
The Belleville resident apologized for the confusion.
He was throwing out the briefcase but it was too big for the garbage so he left it beside the pump.
