A driver that wouldn’t stop for Belleville police ended up crashing and causing a natural gas leak in the heart of downtown early this morning.
Police tried to stop a car around John Street, but it sped away.
Police stopped pursuing the car, but it ended up crashing into a tree, a bike stand, and other objects on Front Street, as well as rupturing a gas line near Victoria Avenue.
Some businesses were damaged.
The driver ran away on foot.
The collision happened just before 3 this morning (Saturday).
Residents living in the immediate area of Front and Victoria were evacuated for an hour and a half while the air cleared of gas.
City police, firefighters, paramedics, and Union Gas responded to the incident.
