It’s the news several Bayside Public School students and parents have been hoping for.
Quinte News has learned the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has decided to uncap the French Immersion program at Bayside.
In May, the board capped the program because there were only enough applications from Grade 4 students within the Bayside catchment area for two classes instead of the usual three. At the time frustrated parents spoke to Quinte News about how they felt blindsided by the board for not telling them enrolment was ‘first come first serve.’
Spokeswoman Kerry Donnell said over the summer the board learned there were significant changes in the Grade 4 Non-French Immersion enrolment that allowed for the creation of one extra French Immersion class.
Parent Adam Burr says he feels like a huge weight has been lifted off of his family’s shoulders now that the Board has reversed its decision. Back in May, Burr and his wife Tanya had explained to Quinte News how their 11-year-old daughter Chloe has been in the program for three years and the plan was for Liam to be enrolled too.
Burr smiled at how the news Liam and about 15 of his peers had been removed from a waiting list was welcomed news.
Donnell said Grade 4 students who are taking the Non-French Immersion program will be enrolled in a Grade 3/4 class.
