Earlier this month (August), Statistics Canada released statistics on families, households, and marital status gleaned from the census taken last year.
The local trends mirror those nationally, fewer couples with children, more without kids, and many more single person households.
In Belleville, the number of “census couples” with kids was down 4% to 21% from 25% a decade ago in 2006.
The number of couples without children remained almost the same at 27%.
The number of one person households increased almost 2% to 31% from 2006.
In Quinte West, the number of “census couples” with kids declined 6% to 26% from 20016.
The number of couples without kids was up 1%.
The number of one person households increased 3% to 25% from 2006.
In Prince Edward County, the number of “census couples” with kids dropped a lot, decreasing by 7% to 20% from 2006.
Meanwhile, the number of couples without kids was up 2% to 41%.
One person households increased in number by 3% to 25% from the 2006 census.
According to Statistics Canada, a “census family” is made up of a married couple, a common-law couple, or a lone parent.
