Prince Edward County council has deferred discussing a pair of ‘hot button’ issues until September to give the public an opportunity to respond to them.
On Tuesday night, residents packed council chambers expecting to speak to an amended road user agreement with WPD White Pines and/or Picton’s Town Hall and former fire station being listed for potential sale through a request for proposal process.
In April, the Environmental Review Tribunal reduced WPD White Pines’ plans to build a 27 industrial turbine farm on the County’s south shore, down to nine.
Tuesday night, council deferred the matter of an amended “road users” agreement with the company.
Mayor Robert Quaiff said on May 31, WPD informed the County they were going ahead with the project.
The second issue at hand is a June 29 committee of the whole meeting where the horseshoe carried a motion to receive proposals for the Picton Town Hall’s future. The committee agreed to give potential interest groups 90 days to come forward with plans for the former fire hall that is still an active town hall. Council’s intent was to sell the former fire hall to put the funds towards the purchase of the new one when the department moved to McDonald Drive in 2016.
More than 80 people attended a recent town hall meeting headed by Picton councillor Lenny Epstein where residents raised strong opposition to selling the public space at 2 Ross Street.
Both the town hall road user agreement matters will be discussed at a special committee of the whole meeting on September 19 at 7 p.m.
