A group of local residents are coming together aiming to make a difference in Prince Edward County by donating thousands of dollars to charity.
The team 100 People Who Care PEC is hoping to raise $10,000 or more four times a year for charities within the municipality. Similar to the groups 100 Men Who Care Quinte and 100+ Women Who Care Quinte – 100 People Who Care PEC is looking to bring local residents together with each donating $100 to one of three charitable programs selected through a draw. A representative from each agency speaks to the initiative and then individuals vote on what charity they would like to see receive the funds. In about 20 minutes thousands are donated to the charity. In less than two years, the two existing groups have donated more than $200,000 to charities within the Quinte Region.
Co-Founder Mark Davis explained he and retired Superior Court Judge Richard Byers were members of the 100 men group in Belleville and had many discussions about how based on numbers and the size of the Quinte area the funds would never likely reach the shores of the County. He added that the possibility of a County charity receiving thousands of dollars could potentially be a game-changer.
The founding committee is made up of David Fox, Mark Davis, Mary Stever, Judy Fraser and Richard Byers. Davis said the board held its first board meeting on Tuesday and welcomed about 50 people interested in the idea.
Davis added he is hoping that it will become a social hour for many as well, like with the other two groups who see the night as a time to get out with friends.
The first meeting is on October 9 at the Waring House Hall at 7:30 p.m.
