Hastings County is fighting a private members’ bill that would force it to pay thousands more in the cost of insurance coverage for long term care workers.
The private members’ bill would force Hastings County into another category of employee insurance, costing an extra $275,000 a year.
CAO Jim Pine told council the county would have to make cuts to residents’ care to make up the shortfall in the budget.
Pine says he “doesn’t see the logic in the move,” and he “doesn’t see the sense in it.”

Hastings County is joining a number of others, including Lanark, Northumberland and Leeds Grenville counties that have similar concerns and are fighting the bill before it becomes effective.
