Plans are underway to build more affordable housing units in the City of Belleville.
Hastings County Community Services committee is recommending approval of two separate buildings for a total of 26 units, 24 of them to be affordable housing.
At the meeting Wednesday, Director Erin Rivers says the key is to partner with local groups as well as the province.
MAPS Development Corporation will spend $1.6 million for construction of a 26-unit building on Sidney Street, 18 units of which will be affordable housing.
Pathways to Independence will spend $673,750 to build six new affordable housing units on North Park Street.
The housing will be one-bedroom apartments.
In the case of the Pathways project, it is expected to house elderly parents possibly supporting a grown child with disabilities.
Both projects will have on-site support staff to help residents maintain their housing.
Both projects support recommendations in the Hastings County 10-year Housing and Homelessness plan to increase services for non-senior people experiencing mental illness, addictions or life skills issues.
Provincial funding for the housing is set at $2.2 million.
Once approved by the province, construction is expected to get underway this fall.
