A Belleville-based company has released a first-of-its-kind alternative to antibiotics for cattle.
Novavive’s medicinal treatment called Amplimune is now available in Canada and is used to treat diseases like E. coli in calves.
Novavive President Graeme McRae tells Quinte News, moving away from treating cattle with antibiotics will help combat antibiotic resistance being developed in humans, due to their overuse in livestock.
McRae adds it’s just one of a number of helpful animal treatments the company has developed.
McRae says the technology was first developed by Bioniche, before it got broken up and was moved to France, before being re-acquired by Novavive three years ago.
