The Mayor of Belleville, members of the city’s Inclusion Committee, and members of the Belleville Islamic Community are heading to Ottawa this Monday, May 1.
The contingent will present the Canadian flag that was flown at half-mast at a Belleville vigil as a show of solidarity for the Islamic community in Quebec City after six people were killed and many others wounded in an attack on a mosque on January 29.
In Ottawa, the flag will be presented to a Quebec City MP in Ottawa who will in turn give it to the mosque where the attack occurred in that city.
Chair of the Belleville Inclusion Committee, Councillor Garnet Thompson, says it’s crucial that Belleville continue to welcome all cultures and religions.
