The vision for what could be a multi-million dollar revitalization of the Picton Harbour, is coming together.
On Thursday, the Picton Harbour sub-committee presented a report to the committee of the whole outlining a series of 23 recommendations to facilitate development and address resident and visitor needs.
Recommendations include increasing accessibility, amenities and activities such as: expanding the boardwalk around the harbour; signage; additional docks; a crosswalk across Bridge Street; WIFI services; restaurants and bars; enhancing the marina building; parking; trails; a farm and artisan market and car, bike, kayak and canoe rentals. If adopted it’s estimated the entire project could take up to five years to complete and would be funded by private and public investments. A firm price tag isn’t available yet but ball park figures have the project costing anywhere from $1.4 million to $2.7 million.
Sub-committee member councillor Treat Hull says the harbour is a hidden jewel and they want to make it more of a focal point in the community.
During the meeting Hull said they have met with various stakeholders and there is a real appetite for further development on the Picton Bay, including condominium development.
Next steps include recommending that the Community Economic Development Commission and council adopt the Picton Harbour development vision as a framework document to serve as a guide for both public and private investment opportunities as they arise. In addition a number of studies and business plans will need to be completed along with ministry permits issued to get the project off the ground. The committee will also be seeking various partnerships with organizations and businesses and investigating land acquisitions.
