Improper assessments by the Municipal Properies Assessment Corporation is costing Belleville millions of dollars in taxes.
A total of 2 million has to be repaid within 120 days
Treasurer Brian Cousins told council Tuesday that local big box stores are winning assessment appeals, with 143 more reviews in line.
City council heard the news during the opening day of its budget debate.
The assessments were challenged by industrial and commercial businesses and are costing the city $2 million in paybacks this year.

He says the city depends on MPAC for setting its tax rates.
Miller says one problem is the fact that MPAC was working with figures that are four years old.
Councillor Mitch Panciuk said some commercial properties were over-assessed in the first place.
