The rivalry between the Trenton Golden Hawks and Wellington Dukes is one of the best in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. But the Golden Hawks and the Cobourg Cougars is a close second.
The G-Hawks and Cougars open the OJHL’s North-East Conference Championship series tonight at 7:30 at the Dunc McDonald Community Gardens.
The similarities between the two teams are many. Trenton finished first in the Conference with 87 points. Cobourg was second with 82. Cougars goaltender Stefano Durante had the best goals against average (1.92) in the League. The Golden Hawks Chris Janzen was third (1.98). They split the season series 2-2 and each club is hosting a major championship. Trenton will be home to the Dudley-Hewitt Cup in early May. Then it’s Cobourg’s turn to stage the RBC Cup.
This will likely be a long series with plenty of emotion on the ice and in the stands.
All games in the series will be broadcast on CJBQ 800 and cjbq.com and will be presented by Eastern Overhead Doors.
