Prince Edward County Council is having second thoughts about offering a property tax rebate to owners of vacant industrial or commercial properties.
Council’s Committee of the Whole wants a questionnaire sent out to commercial/industrial property owners in the county to ask their opinion of the “vacancy rebates”
Many councillors agreed with Jamie Forrester who thought rebates were a disincentive to owners working hard to lease their facilities.
However, Councillor Barry Turpin didn’t think tax rebates led to long term vacancies.
The tax rebates on vacant commercial/industrial property cover about one third of the taxes owed.
Staff will provide a report after property owners are surveyed on the issue.
