Amanda Bain wants to alleviate poverty and ensure everyone can access quality mental health services.
Bain, an outgoing graduate of the Developmental Services Worker program at Loyalist College, is representing the Bay of Quinte riding as one of 338 women between the ages of 18 and 23 in Ottawa this week taking part in Daughters of the Vote. The organization ‘Equal Voice’ was created to promote the participation of women in politics and government.
Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis says he was honoured to offer his seat in the House of Commons to Bain – an astute and strong local female leader on Wednesday – International Women’s Day.
Bain who values collaboration and building relational connectivity, works to eliminate poverty and ensure that individuals can access quality mental health services through her employment in the field of disability rights. Her goal is to further her educational attainments by pursuing an undergraduate degree in Human Services, this upcoming fall.
“The privilege of being able to encourage our youngest generations, and especially young women, to perceive their own strengths or potential to contribute toward decision making and generation of new ideas, through governance, always produces tremendous joy for me,” said MP Ellis. “The clarity of optimism illustrated today, by the Daughters of the Vote, has shown us that many of our young women are indeed eager to add their voices and visions for Canada, into the public forum,” added Ellis.
Many Daughters of the Vote presented the House with a range of complex questions on the trajectory of the Government of Canada’s policies and plans. Together, they challenged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on issues most relevant to their communities and also, to themselves.
The prime minister marked International Women’s Day by announcing his government’s plan to spend $650 million over three years for projects involving sexuality education, improving reproductive health services and investing in family planning and contraceptives.
Trudeau says far too many women and girls around the world see reproductive rights violated and, in many cases, are subject to gender and sexual-based violence.
He later paid tribute to his wife as his feminist inspiration.
