A Belleville doctor’s office was served with a health protection order recently but the Hastings Prince Edward health unit says the public was “not at risk.”
The public health inspection of the office of Dr. Duska Vukojevic’s office in the Bay View Mall was carried out January 24 and an order was issued that there be no use of sterilizer equipment, sterilization work had to be sent out of office, and there was a along with a list of hygiene concerns.
A report was presented to the Hastings Prince Edward Board of Health on Wednesday.
Medical Officer of Health resident Dr. Peter Oglaza told Quinte News.
Oglaza says the sterilizer was shut down.
The order was lifted February 8 and inspectors confirmed it again nine days later.
The order information was placed on the health unit website but Oglaza says there was no general media release, as in the case of a measles oubreak for instance, since the “risk to present and past patients was minimal.”
Some of the items identified in the order under section 13 of the Health Protecton and Promotion Act as “infection control lapses:”
Inadequate hand hygiene products, inappropriate storage of sharps container,
Inadequate cleaning and disinfection of work surfaces,
Reuseable instruments were not stored and not handled in a manner protecting them from potential contamination,
Lack of knowledge of infection prevention and control of policies and their location within medical office.
