While it’s garnered great attention for teaching young kids bike and pedestrian safety skills since 2005, the Belleville Children’s Safety Village is looking at expanding.
Members of the media and other community partners were part of a presentation at the village Thursday, outlining some of its current programs and some proposed changes moving forward.
Outgoing Executive Director Jill Raycroft tells Quinte News, it’s about keeping the village viable, by expanding to teach things like internet and rail safety, which is especially important in our area.
There have also been discussions about partnering with Belleville’s fire prevention staff, to incorporate some other family-based, fire safety programs.
Raycroft added that since it can be expensive to get full classes down to the village and parents don’t always hear what’s being taught to their kids, they’re looking at ways to incorporate more family programs at the village.
Also during the event, Scotiabank presented a cheque for $10,000 to the safety village and will have a sign put up on one of the buildings there this summer.
Raycroft also says the village board will be hiring a replacement executive director, on a part time basis, sometime in the near future.
