Numerous charges have been laid against a 58-year-old man after an attempted theft of an 18-foot enclosed trailer in Centre Hastings.
At 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Central Hastings OPP were called to a theft in progress on Highway 62 south of Madoc.
A witness reported observing a man attempting to steal an 18 foot enclosed trailer by removing locks and preparing to hook it up to his vehicle.
The suspect fled the scene upon realizing his actions were being watched.
Officers located the suspect Derrick Buntin of Bath driving on the Highway 401 exit ramp at Highway 37 in Belleville. An investigation revealed he was also in possession of a quantity of hydromorphone and Canadian currency. In addition, a crossbow was located in his vehicle.
He was charged with theft Over $5000, mischief Under $5000, driving While Disqualified, possession of a Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking- Hydromorphone; possession of Proceeds Obtained by Crime under $5000 and possession of a Weapon Contrary to a Prohibition Order.
He was held in custody pending a bail hearing on February 12, 2017.
