A car crashed into a hydro pole and a house in east-end Belleville knocking out power to over 1,000 homes Tuesday afternoon.
Just after 4 p.m., emergency response crews were called to the area of Herchimer Avenue between Southview and Pine Streets.
Belleville Fire Chief Mark MacDonald said the pole was sheared off at ground level and the car then continued on to strike a house. The driver was the lone occupant and was taken by paramedics to Belleville General Hospital for assessment. Their injuries are unknown at this time.
As a result, Herchimer Avenue is closed between Southview Avenue and Pine Street until further notice.
MacDonald said Veridian is on site and believes there are more than 1,000 homes affected in the area of Bleecker Avenue. to Herchimer Avenue and Russel Street to Bridge Street.
It is estimated that power will be restored to the majority of homes between 8 and 9 p.m. and a few homes in the immediate vicinity should be restored around midnight when the pole replacement is complete.
