Several places in the Quinte area are involved in a new program aimed at diverting hazardous household waste like old batteries from Ontario landfills by returning it to the store.
Many municipalities already collect waste like old paint on designated days, but the “Do What You Can’ Program, which began today, lets consumers drop it off at participating retail stores.
Rona Cashway, Home Depot and Home Hardware outlets accept some, but not necessarily all of the products, so people should check first.
`Do What You Can’ is expected to cost 28 million dollars in its first year, but will be expanded to include items such as aerosol containers, fluorescent light bulbs and corrosive cleaners.
