Reports to our newsroom say a Belleville retirement home, which has made headlines previously, will be closing its doors and forcing residents out.
Residents at the Bel Marine facility on Dundas Street East tell Quinte News management has given them two weeks notice to find alternate living arrangements, at their own expense, or be moved to another facility in the London, Hamilton or Niagara areas.
Belleville Fire Prevention Officer John Lake says there are certainly some immediate safety issues with the building that ownership has to fix, but the fire department has not told management to evacuate residents.
In 2014, the home was shut down for some time, due to a number of electrical issues.
MPP Todd Smith says he’s been told the home is working with the Community Care Access Centre, local mental health services and other agencies, to help relocate and provide supports for the home’s 40-to-50 residents.
We’ve reached out to facility management and are awaiting comment.
