A contest coming up to help young people butt-out.
The Hastings Prince Edward health unit is hosting the 6-week Wouldurather… contest being offered to young adults across Ontario..
The Wouldurather… contest is held annually to support young adults in their efforts to quit smoking, cut back on their smoking, refrain from smoking while drinking, or to remain smoke free.
This year, participants have the chance to win grand prizes worth up to $5,000!
Health promoter David Patterson says young adults in Ontario have the highest smoking prevalence at 18.4% compared to the general population at 16.1%. Patterson says that continued tobacco use through young adulthood is a predictor for future tobacco use.
Last year, more than 8,600 young adults entered the Wouldurather… contest!
A 2011 evaluation of the contest suggests that up to 20% of individuals who enter the contest will quit smoking.
Registration is open at Wouldurather.ca until January 22nd, 2017 at 11:59 pm.
