TMFRC Partnership
Chair June Hagerman announced at the Loyalist College Board of Governors meeting Thursday that the college has partnered with the Trenton Military Family Resource Centre to assist with quality programming for military members and their families. The partnership will also allow those military members to pursue post-secondary education through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Portfolio Development Program. The PLAR Program is designed for people to want to plan a career and enter into a College Diploma Program.
Loyalist President Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan pointed to the proximity of Trenton to the College as a crucial piece of the partnership.
“What this partnership is going to allow, is to credit people for the work experience that they’ve had and other experiences they have. (It is) another advantage of the college system.”
The College and the Trrnton MFRC have worked together on various programs for over a decade.
Two new programs announced
Two new certificate programs were also introduced on Thursday. They were; the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) program (two years) and the Radiation Safety program (one year). The CICE program will consist of community involvement, human relations, and vocational skills, which will all come together as the student transitions into volunteer work or paid employment, either part-time or full-time. The Radiation Safety program will be ideal for environmental, biotechnology and chemical engineering graduates to build on their diploma or degree with specialized training in radiation physics and environmental radioactivity.
Vaughan says there will be a total of 30 programs offered by the new year.
“It’s the wonderful thing about colleges, that we are able to respond to student needs and employer’s needs quite quickly,” Vaughan said.
