The big new Trent Port Marina at the mouth of the Trent River is finished and serving boaters, but Quinte West council will be discussing more improvements for boaters soon.
At a meeting of the Quinte West Public Works Committee, a consultant with Shoreplan Engineering described options for major improvements to the boat launches and docks in Centennial Park and off of Ontario Street in the Kiwanis Community Park along the Trent River.
The consultant said the two double launch ramps and docks at Ontario Street are in rough shape and don’t extend deep enough into the water.
At Centennial Park, the 3 north ramps and docks are in poor condition. The consultant said the big double launch ramp and dock to the north was fine and didn’t need much work.
Expanded and improved parking was also suggested for both launch areas.
The estimated cost for a complete reconstruction at Ontario Street was $375,000.
A partial reconstruction was estimated at $145,000. The consultant estimated costs for 10 new parking spaces for vehicles and trailers and other work at another $100,000.
Work suggested for Centennial Park includes replacing 3 old single launch ramps and docks with 2 big double launch ramps and docks.
That work is estimated at $760,000.
Adding another L shaped dock with gangway access was estimated at $120,000.
Improved parking at Centennial Park is estimated to cost $95,000.
None of the cost estimates include construction contingencies (normally between 20% and 25%), design fees, or other fees.
The work will involve permits from senior government.
The Public Works Committee is recommending the projects go to the 2017 capital budget discussions.
Mayor Jim Harrison says the projects are important because council wants the city to offer excellent facilities to tourists and locals
alike. The new Trent Port Marina is impressing people and better public boat launches might attract more big time fishing derbies.
Facilities all along the Trent Severn will be upgraded over the next couple of years.
