It could get pretty noisy at Prince Edward County council tonight as owners of a pair of popular venues are expected to speak out against proposed amendments to the existing noise bylaw.
About three weeks ago, a new 12 a.m. limit was suggested for all outdoor gatherings, public or private, in the County. This includes venues such as barns and wineries where they opt to keep the doors open well into the night. The current bylaw has a 2 a.m. cutoff.
Previously Commissioner of Engineering, Development and Public Works Robert McAuley said Bylaw enforcement officers are being called out regularly to two main types of events – large private gatherings and barn dances including winery events.
The owners of Fields on West Lake and the Hayloft Dance Hall have prepared deputations to council, both stating the change would hinder growth.
Fields on West Lake, a well-known wedding venue is no stranger to this issue. In previous years, Mark Henry has spoken out, as well as completed renovations to reduce noise levels.
Hayloft owner Shawn Thomas Creamer says he and his wife invested their life savings into a business because they felt it was a community encouraging small business. He says this amendment goes against the County’s strategic plan.
Previously councillor Jamie Forrester had said he would like to see the cut off at 11 p.m.
Council gets underway at 7 p.m. at Shire Hall.
