Belleville’s West Zwick’s Park is in line for a major retrofit if all goes well with a grant application.
West Zwick’s Centennial Park was built as a federal government 1967 centennial project.
It was the site of the city’s Canada Day celebrations in 1967.
Some renovations have occurred over the years but much of the infrastructure, including the washroom building, septic system and potable water supply were constructed in 1967.
Now, as Canada’s 150th anniversary approaches, city council will apply for Ontario 150 Community Capital grant of $500,000, for a $1 million upgrade, the remainder coming through the 2017 budget.

Grant request causes a stir
A request by a newly-formed service club for a small grant caused a stir at city council last night.
The Quinte Civitan Club asked for a $398 grant to help with a car show fundraiser at the fairgrounds this Saturday.
Councillor Jackie Denyes said it would be unfair since the grant committee refused a number of applicants at its last meeting in July because they had come in late.
Denyes pointed out the committee was formed to avoid long lineups at the city council podium.
The committee’s next meeting isn’t until November.
Mayor Taso Christopher suggested “maybe the committee should meet more often.”
After a lengthy discussion on the work of the committee and the benefits of assisting the new Quinte Civitan Club the grant was approved.
Council also approved a grant of $1220 for the downtown Street Festival requested by the DBIA.
