As the 2016-17 Ontario Junior Hockey League season approaches, one of our local Quinte area teams is getting set to raise some money for their club.
The Wellington Dukes are holding the 2016 Garry Lavender Memorial Golf Classic on Saturday, September 3 at the Wellington on the Lake Golf Course.
The tournament is named after and honoured for the late legendary County sports figure Garry Lavender, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 60. Lavender was very involved with the Dukes organization, having coached them at the Junior C level in the 1970s and 1980s. He was also very instrumental in bringing the old Jr. B Belleville Bobcats to the County in 1989 and turning them into one of the most successful Tier II Jr. A franchises in Canada. He was one of eight inaugural inductees into the PEC Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with an 11 a.m. shotgun start to follow. The format for the tournament will be a 4 man scramble. The cost per player will be $125, with a fee for 18 holes, a cart, as well as food and drink at each hole included.
Some of the competitions that participants will be golfing in include a longest drive contest, closest to the pin competition and a putting contest, among other challenges.
Following the day of golf, dinner will be provided at the Wellington Legion. Prizes will also be available.
Current and past Dukes players will be on hand as well, with a few of the present-day Dukes welcoming competitors at each hole.
Sponsorship opportunities will be available and donations are encouraged.
The Dukes are looking for a full field of 72 participants to enter in the tournament. Slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Registration ends on August 26.
