While the footprint of the brush fire near the Village of Marmora hasn’t grown, the size of the fire is actually bigger
than originally reported.
The fire was caused by human activity late Friday afternoon and at the time the Ministry of Natural Resources reported it as
being about one hectare in size, but today (Tuesday) Marmora and Lake Fire Chief Tony Brownson says the fire covers about 2 hectares.
Chief Brownson says his firefighters are dealing with the brush fire themselves, but that the Ministry of Natural Resources helped the
the first day with about 8 loads of water dropped from overhead by a water bomber aircraft.
The forest/brush fire has proven to be stubborn, burning underground into tree roots and moving through spaces like underground caverns.
Chief Brownson says his crews will douse one area, only to find flames popping up in another area. The work is hard, involving the moving of hoses
and using hand shovels to dig under stumps and get at roots.
Between 6 and a dozen firefighters have been showing up since the initial call came in after 4 Friday afternoon.
The water to fight the blaze is coming from a nearby river, already running at low levels due to drought.
Chief Brownson says the fire isn’t growing in size and they’ll stay at it.
It is located in the area of Deloro and Malone Quarry Roads and is not threatening any population or structures.
