Belleville is declaring the proposed Quinte Craft-Octoberfest “of municipal significance” but wants more information before lending a helping hand.
Representatives of the Quinte Restaurant Association appeared before city council Monday night to outline the Quinte Craft – Octoberfest plans for the Empire Theatre site, requesting services and to have the city waive the fees for out-of-town food vendors.
Spokesman John Alexiou says the association is partnering with the Belleville Shrine , and the Belleville Downtown Improvement Area is supporting the idea.
Some members of council questioned the request for outdoor washrooms, garbage and recycling, street sweeping and paid police services.
Councillor Jackie Denyes questioned the fact they had not appeared before the grant committee.
Council approved the special occasion permit but the assistance request was tabled to the next council meeting.
Council approves road upgrades
Belleville will undertake a major multi-road upgrade in its North East Industrial Park.
Businesses within the park have raised concerns about the condition which could impact the shipment of goods if allowed to deteriorate.
Monday night city council awarded the paving project to Coco Paving for a total cost of $2.94 million, to rehabilitate the entire length of Adam Street, Jamieson Bone Road and Lahr Drive, part of University Avenue and College Street East.
And, council accepted a bid from Cruickshank Construction for a total of $672,000 to resurface Hope Crescent, Hastings Drive, Tripp Boulevard, and Tracey Park Drive.
Cruickshank’s was the lowest of three tenders.
Avonlough gets 3-way stop
Belleville city council has decided to put a three-way traffic stop at the corner of Avonlough Road and Monteagle Boulevard.
Council heard a deputation from Glenn Lidstone on behalf of area residents
who said motorists speeding in the area are a major concern since there are no sidewalks.
Councillor Paul Carr said the city’s transportation committee should deal with a “traffic calming policy” for long- term answers, such as speed bumps, on city streets.
