A surge in public-sector jobs delivered a boost to Canada’s labour market last month and helped drop the national unemployment rate to 6.9 per cent, its lowest level since last July.
Statistics Canada’s latest labour force survey says the country gained 13,800 jobs in May, including 30,200 public-sector positions offsetting weakness in Alberta.
In Ontario, the unemployment rate last month was 7.1 percent, down from 8.3 percent in May of last year.
Locally, for this part of the province, the unemployment picture was much better last month, as the rate sat at 7.1 percent. Last year at this time, the regional rate was much higher, at 8.3 percent.
