A 36-year-old man from the Campbellford area has been charged under Ontario’s distracted driving law, after OPP say he drove his car into the Trent River canal yesterday.
Emergency crews were called around 3:45, after reports of a grey jeep in the water, near Trent Drive.
Investigators say no other cars were involved, but one car did have to swerve out of the way and the driver of the jeep was able to get out, once the vehicle went into the water.
Along with the charge of driving while using a handheld device, the driver is also facing a $490 fine and three demerit points.
His name wasn’t released.
