A fortunate break for the Trenton Golden Hawks in the third period led to a big first win.
Kevin Lavoie scored twice including the game winner midway through the third period to give the Trenton Golden Hawks a 3-2 win over the Brooks, Alberta Bandits in the opening game of the RBC Cup.
The Bandits controlled a good deal of the play outshooting Trenton 23-13 over the final two periods and 31-22 in the game.
Lavoie, who was named player of the game for Trenton, says his team as a whole did a great job of battling through adversity, especially in a tough second period.
G-Hawks co-captain Adam Clements says it’s a good thing to get an early win in a short tournament.
Once again Daniel Urbani was outstanding in the Trenton goal, making 29 stops. Danny Hanlon had the other Trenton goal.
The win was Trenton’s first ever victory on the national stage.
The Golden Hawks take on the Carleton Place Canadians this afternoon. CJBQ has the play by play beginning at 5:20.
