Prince Edward County is looking at joining its surrounding municipalities in entering into a partnership with Quinte Trash Bash.
At Thursday’s committee of the whole meeting, representatives from the Belleville and Quinte West Trash Bash groups asked the municipality to officially get behind the spring clean up crew.
Becky MacWhirter is the staff representative from the City of Belleville.
Trash Bash has been offered in the County for 20 years with the help of local volunteers.
Commissioner of Engineering, Development and Works Robert McAuley says previously there were liability concerns about volunteers being injured while picking up garbage on the side of the road and that’s why the County was reluctant to get involved.
During the meeting councillor Roy Pennell suggested the County put a little extra into making sure the Highways are cleaned up.
The committee carried a motion that will see a 2016 County led trash bash, for which a date has yet to be set.
$7,500 will be budgeted in 2017 for next year’s Quinte Trash Bash.
The annual event in April, saw 1,500 participants from Belleville, Quinte West, Prince Edward County and Tyendinaga Township fill eight large dumpsters and 14 recyclable carts.
In other business, a 2016 street sweeper is on its way to Prince Edward County and it’s going to cost considerably less than expected.
The brand new six wheel mechanical street sweeper cost $209,356. That’s $27,650 less than budgeted for.
McAuley says next they have to look at a rural roads plan and the labour involved.
The sweeper is being shipped from the west coast and McAuley says it has arrived in Ontario.
