Military members of 8 Wing CFB Trenton will march in Belleville up to city hall Friday to request Freedom of the City.
To mark its 85th anniversary a large contingent of 8 Wing members will march from the Belleville Armoury to the city hall front door.
Once there, Commanding Officer Colonel Colin Keiver will request permission to exercise Freedom of the City.
In keeping with military tradition some members of the Ceremonial Guard will be carrying swords and rifles.
The tradition stems from 15th century England when cities were attacked by military units. Before soldiers were allowed to enter through the city gates, the Chief Constable demanded to know the reason, then escorted the commander to the city council chambers. If the commander convinced the council his troops were to be trusted, Freedom of the City was granted.
Officials say the traditional practice is a symbolic way of recognizing the positive, ongoing relationship enjoyed between the city and CFB Trenton.
Belleville Mayor Taso Christopher says the city’s relationship with 8 Wing is one of trust and respect.
The march will leave the Armouries at 1 p.m. and reach city hall at 1:15.
