Quinte West council has the final say, but it looks as though a legal crosswalk will be reinstated near downtown Trenton.
Early last year the crosswalk at Dundas West and Queen Street near the former St. Peter’s school and Catholic Church be removed.
The intersection was no longer as busy as the school had been closed.
However, a petition containing the names of 430 St. Peter’s parishioners was presented to the city asking that the crosswalk be reinstalled.
Yesterday, Quinte West’s Public Works Committee voted to support bringing back the crosswalk, and at the recommendation of Public Works Director, Chris Angelo, a $5,000 advance warning signal will be installed near the downtown to increase the safety of those using the crosswalk.
There is a curve heading west out of the downtown that impedes sight lines for motorists as they approach Queen Street.
Mayor of Quinte West Jim Harrison said there should have been more consultation before the original decision last year to remove the crosswalk, just as there should have been before a decision to lower the speed limit on a stretch of the Frankford Road east of Frankford, a decision that was also reversed by the committee Tuesday.
