On the eve of the Trenton Goldenhawks’ first game at the Dudley Hewitt Cup in Kirkland Lake, a team executive was asking Quinte West council for financial support for next year’s tournament.
Quinte West is hosting the Dudley Hewitt Cup next spring.
Rob MacDonald told council that the team intends to make next year’s event special, and asked council for $100,000 to help with the costs of holding the tournament.
The Goldenhawks plan many special events throughout Quinte West to promote the event, and will be touring the province as well in a specially wrapped bus, which would feature the City of Quinte West logo advertising for the Trent Port Marina.
An opening banquet is planned in the National Air Force Museum of Canada.
MacDonald expects about 20,000 people to take in the 8 game, week long tournament and predicts a $3.50 return on every $1.00 invested.
Councillor Fred Kuypers said he’s been a Trenton Junior A hockey fan ever since the late Doug Whitney introduced him to the game, adding he’d be voting in support of the Goldenhawks.
Mayor Jim Harrison praised the Goldenhawks players and management, saying they were doing good work in the community and that he wanted to be sure they could keep doing that.
Council will make a decision on the team’s request for $100,000 at its next meeting.
