Residents in the area of a proposed apartment building in Belleville presented their objections at tonight’s planning committee meeting.
They packed the city hall council chambers last night.
The residents were objecting to the proposal for four blocks of three-storey apartment buildings on Sidney Street close to the intersection of Sidney and College Streets.
The complex would have a total of 120 rental units.
One of the objectors, Alan McIntosh, who lives near the intersection, said the traffic study was done when a nursing home was planned for the site and that wasn’t the same as for apartments.
Speaking for the developer, Arnold Vandemeer said the company is dealing with concerns about drainage and the fate of the trees in the area.
Mayor Taso Christopher said traffic was already “snarled” in that area and it was a “slippery slope’ and he would only support the first building with 30 units.

The committee decided to recommend that city council approve only the first building with 30 units, and new applications would have to be made for any other buildings.
