Belleville will take a new approach to concession food stands in its city parks system.
City council recently approved a plan to allow various tournament organizers to arrange their own licensed mobile concessions in the city’s active parks.
This includes Mary-Anne Sills Park, Centennial Park, Tom Gavey Alemite, Riverside Park West, Zwicks Centennial Park for non-community events there, and Thurlow Park.
In his report, director of recreation Mark Fluhrer says there has been a drop in interest by people wanting to run the seasonal food vendors stands and seasonal revenues paid to the city from them are relatively low.
He says, for sports events and tournaments, organizers have taken events to other communities due to lack of concession options here or there is only one exclusive vendor.
Fluhrer also points out that some city park canteens are in rough shape and in the future he would like to install concrete pads to accommodate mobile concessions in a bid to cap expenditures in that area.
