A Canadian coalition group says it is interested in supporting a local MPP’s private members’ bill.
On Monday, Gary Grant of the National Coalition Against Contraband Tobacco, visited the Quinte region, to talk about illegal cigarettes and their harm to the economy and society.
Grant says he is in support of any legislation that gives the OPP some teeth in this fight, including Prince Edward Hastings MPP Todd Smith’s Smoke Free Schools Act legislation.
Grant estimates about $1.1 billion is tax revenue is lost in the province because of contraband tobacco.
Smith’s bill has passed second reading at Queen’s Park.
It currently has the support of the Ontario Convenience Store Association, the local health unit and several other groups aimed at curbing contraband tobacco.
