Belleville is getting ahead of the game and setting the rules for medicinal marijuana clinics before there are any in sight.
City council had made it clear that it would only deal with “medical marijuana” clinics and it wanted regulations in place.
Director of engineering and development Rod Bovay says the idea is to amend the city’s zoning by-law to define medical marijuana and cannabis-related uses in the by-laws.
Bovay says it would mean that anyone wanting to open such a facility would have to apply for rezoning.
He says this speaks to the methadone clinic issue.
The amendment to the by-law will be considered at the planning meeting tonight.
