Belleville police are once again advising the public not to give out personal information over the phone.
A senior constable says they get about 50 calls a week from residents reporting they were or almost were defrauded out of money.
He tells Quinte News that the most frequent complaints they receive are about callers claiming to work for the Canada Revenue Agency or credit companies.
He says in most cases the fraudsters are phoning from overseas. He recalls one incident where the victim’s credit card was being racked up in China.
A caller to our newsroom who wishes to remain anonymous tells us she got a phone call from someone pretending to work for Mastercard and Visa this week.
The fake credit card employee then offered a lower interest rate but needed some more information.
Our caller says she hung up and called the police and the Canadian Fraud Agency.
