The National Coalition Against Contraband Tobacco is making several stops in the area Monday, January 18.
Coalition spokesperson Gary Grant, a 39-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service will make stops in Kingston, Belleville and Brighton, on what is called the “Contraband Trail,” which is the 401 corridor.
Grant will be at Belleville’s City Hall at 11:00 a.m and will visit MPP Lou Rinaldi at his constituency office in Brighton at 2:45 p.m.
The coalition says contraband tobacco funds more than 175 criminal gangs and supports drugs, guns and human smuggling.
In Belleville, 2015 data shows 33% of cigarettes smoked were contraband.
