A staff proposal to phase-out area policing costs in the city of Belleville has been put on the back burner. The recommendation from Manager of Taxation Susan Howard calls for the phase out of area costing for Thurlow Ward by th year 2013. Thurlow Councillor Jackie Denyes says it wouldn’t be fair to ask rural residents to pay the same for policing as residents of the urban area, mainly because of the vast geography involved in response times. During budget deliberations Council decided to table the issue until after the police department establishes “zoning system”… probably by this summer. The issue would come back for consideration in next year’s budget.
