Belleville council has supported a resolution being circulated by Kingston council regarding a “basic income guarantee”.
The resolution asks that municipal and provincial governments, along with the federal government begin a serious discussion about providing every Canadian with a guaranteed basic income that will provide a decent standard of living.
Councillor Garnet Thompson said there was too much poverty and that it was a growing problem coast to coast, and that the idea of a guaranteed basic income should be considered as soon as possible.
