The Lorne Brooker Show continued conversations with the candidates last week, ahead of the April 28th federal election.
The Green Party of Canada selected Erica Charlton as the candidate in the Bay of Quinte riding.
The county resident has a Bachelor in Psychology and another in Arts and says she found a home in the Green Party.
“I love that it is a very science-based, fact-based, policy-making process and a grassroots initiative. So I knew that joining that party I’d be able vote, if I was ever elected, in a way of integrity because I would be able to represent the community properly, with our issues.”
Brooker asked Charlton about the focus on energy and natural resources that Canada has.
“The best thing that we could do is make investments now that are going to protect us and keep us more sustainable in the future and give us a cutting edge in the world.”
Charlton also discussed trade.
“Canada’s actually built on a foundation of rural communities taking care of each other. So if we’re going to expand that inter-provincially as well so we can break down these trade barriers, we can get our raw resources across the country to be manufactured or processed – we’re going to create so many jobs.”
She discussed concerns she has on the policy front among other parties.
“We’re not effectively pushing our money into the industries that matter. When you talk about NATO, we’re not meeting only our military requirements, we’re also not meeting our greenhouse gas reduction emission requirements as well. NATO has a pretty strict target of 45 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050. We’re nowhere near that.”
