Greater Napanee Mayor Terry Richardson says his town is committed to doing its part to address the housing crisis, and strong mayor powers is a piece of the puzzle that will help the community reach its goals.
Last week the province granted strong mayor powers to another 169 municipalities, including Napanee, effective May 1.
Strong mayor powers are meant to reduce obstacles that stand in the way of new housing and infrastructure development by speeding up approvals for budgets, housing, transit, and other infrastructure.
A comprehensive report will be brought to council soon to define the town’s legislative obligations and how to proceed with the new measures.
Quinte West, Prince Edward County, Brighton, Cobourg and Bancroft were also granted strong mayor powers.
Belleville has had the measure since 2023.
