Belleville City Council approved repealing a by-law that regulated garage sales in the community.
The by-law, initially introduced in March of 1999, required a licence for the “selling of goods, wares and merchandise in residential areas.”
The licence would limit the operation of a yard sale to two consecutive days, between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. on each day, with each household being limited to two per calendar year.
The cost was $2 to acquire a licence and it was never increased during the time it was enacted.
In her report to council, Manager of By-law Enforcement Aggie Hill said that the rule may have been necessary at the time to manage the impact of a higher number of garage sales that could disrupt neighbourhoods.
Hill says, however, that due to the infrequency and reduced scale of modern garage sales, it renders the by-law outdated.
